Unfinished Empires

Unfinished Empires

Every empire starts as a sketch.
The brave keep building.

A long-form show about building something that isn't finished yet — told by the people still in the middle of it. Not the keynote version. The real one.

The premise

It's not about
perfection

Most business shows interview people about the finished thing. The exit, the raise, the milestone — told backwards, with every dead end quietly edited out. It makes a tidy story and teaches almost nothing, because the version you hear was never the version they lived.

This one goes at the part that isn't done. The near-miss. The decision they'd take back. The question still open on their desk this morning. I ask people what they haven't figured out yet — and I go first.

It blends the storytelling of a good interview with the parts most shows skip: strategy, money, and what the long game actually costs. If you like Diary of a CEO or Big Fish, you'll recognise the register.

What the show believes

  1. The empire you're building is never complete.
  2. You evolve as your business evolves.
  3. Every setback becomes part of the foundation.
  4. The story is always being written.

Format

Long-form 1:1, video and audio. Roughly an hour — though the good ones run over and I don't cut them short.

What sets it apart

Real conversations.
Real builders.

Four things this show does differently, and keeps doing even when it would be easier not to.

01

Founder-led

Every guest is personally reviewed by the host. No booking agency, no filler.

02

Curated

Quality over volume. We'd rather publish eight good episodes than forty forgettable ones.

03

Long-form

Not soundbites. Not a pitch. An actual conversation with room to think.

04

Unscripted

No pre-approved questions. Conversations beat questionnaires every time.

Season one

We're building a season,
not a release date

Episodes are being recorded now. The season goes out when there are enough of them to hold a proper cadence — which is a fairly on-brand way for this particular show to behave.

Who this is for

Built for founders
in the trenches

This show is for people who are actively building — not ideating, not pivoting, not polishing a pitch. If you've made real decisions, faced real consequences and learned something you'd rather not have learned, the conversation will feel natural.

We're less interested in hype and more interested in experience.

A good fit

  • Founders, operators and business owners
  • Actively running or scaling something
  • Willing to name a real mistake on tape
  • Focused on contribution, not promotion

Not a fit

  • Looking for a sales opportunity
  • Wanting the questions in advance
  • Here for clicks or controversy
Your host

Ryan Otto

An operator before an interviewer. He started in hotel accounting in 2000 and spent twenty years inside hotels — the books, then the systems, then the finance — before taking stewardship of a tax practice with forty years of history and building the software he couldn't buy.

He runs the businesses he advises, which means he asks the second question — the one that only lands if you've actually had to make payroll.

Know when it lands

One email when the first episodes go live. Then the show's own rhythm — no daily promotion, no countdown theatre, and no date anyone has to walk back.

That's the only thing this list is for.
